After a trip to the
Start: 4
couples in a quadrille (= square). We use Danish numbering system: head couples
C1+C2, side couples C3+C4. C1 have their backs towards the music, and have C1
face C2 as their opposite and have C3 to their right. The corner Lady (L) is to
the left side of Gent (G).
A traditional Danish quadrille dance is described with
animation figures in dance week 13 on my website of 1999 now placed on: http://www.lavigne.dk/oldfolkdance
The dance consists of 4 parts: circle (variation
figure), couple dance own partner, couple dance corner, chain + rock polka:
1 Circle of the 4 couples, clockwise and
anti clockwise, or variation figure
2 couple dance first by C1+C2, then by
C3+C4, (maybe free choice of dance figures?)
3 couple dance first by G1 and G2 with
corner L, then by G3 and G4
4 chain to own partner, then rock polka
home
bar no
1-5 Circle clockwise and anti clockwise
with walking steps or walk walk 1chasse. Or variation figures.
6-7 C1 and C2: close hold: basic
cha-cha-cha steps (see dance 5 Sailors lined up).
8-9 C1 and C2: cross over break
6-10 C3 and C4: the same.
11-14 G1 and G2 corner L: NY presentation first
towards the inside, then the outside.
11-15 G3 and G4 the same with their corner L.
16-19 Chain walk walk 1chasse to own
partner on opposite place.
20-23 With partner close hold: rock polka home:
rock rock turn-chasse.
The
dance ends in bar 23 with rock polka, maybe out into the ballroom to more
music.
The dance is fast so small steps. If you feel like it:
then include a little hip movement (the boat dance floor is pitching).
The couple dance in 6 -15 can be danced with free
choice of suitable dance figures, see examples below.
Variation
figures, clockwise and anti clockwise (bar 1-5):
1.
Circle of all
2.
One hand mill of the 4 L
3.
One hand mill of the 4 G
4.
Two hand mill of the 4 L
5.
Two hand mill of the 4 G
6.
All circle with waist clasp (=basket)
See dance 5 Sailors
lined up and dance 1 Sailor-rhinelander for
the description of the basic cha-cha-cha steps and: walk walk 1chasse
and of rock polka.
The dance is fast: so small steps.
If you feel like
it: then a little cha-cha-cha hip movement (the ship floor is pitching).
Free couple dance?
You are free to select other dance figures for the
couple dance (bar 6-15), to dance with own partner, with corner, with opposite.
Here we have some suggestions:
Only basic cha-cha-cha steps:
For learning the steps.
Lady turn under arm:
L: right turn under G left arm when G starts stepping
back on his right foot (rf) slow (bar
7 or 9). Then G+L dance together in side-chasse cha-cha-cha.
Both G and L: spot turn:
G full right turn and L full left turn, when crossing
over in
Opening, backwards presentation:
G and L face each other, L left hand (lh) in G right
hand (rh), G ¼ left turn L ¼ right turn so front is towards quadrille: G: cross
back on lf slow right arm around
waist of L, replace weight to rf slow,
turn to face each other: side-chasse towards quadrille cha cha cha. L: the same mirror reflected.
Then the same towards the outside of the quadrille.
Half chain (it is fast):
6-7
C1 and C2 change place with a half chain (see description in introduction).
8-9
All dance with corner where L turn under G left arm (basic steps in 8, turn in
9).
6-10
The same for C3 and C4.
11-15
C1 and C2 haf chain home, then C3 and C4.
It is difficult to have time enough for all in the
beginning, so leave part of it out.
The melody is in 4 parts, 5 lines, (with influence of
calypso).
Accordion: 4 + 4 beats pr bar.
There are many dance instruction videos with
cha-cha-cha, see video list
