Our sailor has been to
We dance for the pleasure so you are free to select a
relaxed informal hold etc.
Start: all
couples stand in the line of dance (lod) after one another: Lady (L) to the
right of Gent (G). Every second couple turn around so 2 couples face one
another: in the big lod circle in the ballroom (or in a long straight line). L
stands to the right of her G and faces her corner G = the opposite G. At the
end of the dance G+L has moved forward to face a new couple.
The dance
consists of 4 parts: circle, couple dance with corner, half-chain, couple dance
with partner:
1 circle of the 2 couples, clockwise and
anticlockwise, walking steps
2 rock jive couple dance with corner:
basic steps, Lady (L) under arm, confrontation
3 half chain to the opposite corner
4 rock jive couple dance with own partner:
basic steps, L rolled in, G+L turn to face new couple, L rolls out again
bar no
1-8 Big circle, holding hands,
walking steps: clockwise and anticlockwise.
9-10 With corner: 2 rock jive basic
steps, 2 hand hold; basic steps in all following:
11 L right hand in G left hand: L
turns right under arms to move a little away: so pulling hands.
12 L and G dance against each
other again, L under arms.
9 G and L dance a little from
each other.
10 G right turns ¼ and L left
turns ¼ so they face the other couple (confrontation).
11-13 G and L turn against each other
again and dance out to own places, 2 basic steps.
14-17 Half chain over to opposite couple
(opposite corner) so the 2 couples change place: right hand to opposite (=
corner) and walk over, G ¼ right turn L ¼ left turn so left hand to meeting own
partner, G ¾ left turn leading his L to place.
18-19 Close hold with partner; 2 basic
steps.
20-21 Opening towards the middle (called
hand to hand) facing the opposite (for saying good by): the close hold is
opened: basic steps where the fall away rock step includes turning away from
partner G turns ¼ left L turns ¼ right so G and L stand side by side G’s right
arm around the waist of L and L’s left hand on the right shoulder of G.
18 2 hand hold 1 basic step.
19 L rolls into arms: L ½ left
turn under L’s right arm so L stands with crossed arms to the right side of G
with G’s right arm around the waist of L holding L’s left hand and G holding
L’s right hand in his left hand.
20 6 fast steps couple wise
turning anti clockwise, G backwards and L forwards, to face the new couple.
22 L rolls out: L lets right hand
go and turns full right to her place: ready to circle with the new couple.
Rock
jive:
Vi danser her almindelig
lidt træk i hinandens hænder.
Calm rock jive,
basic steps:
Rock jive dance basic steps are in 6/4 and the melody
here is also 6/4. The music is counted 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, but for dancing the
“calm rock jive” we count 1, 3, 5, 6 as slow
slow quick quick. Quick quick is
the fall away rock step with a little pulling the hands. The melody has 2
emphasized notes pr bar for the rock step quick
quick. The 2 walking steps on 1 and 3 are also with emphasized notes.
G: left foot (lf) step left on 1 slow, right foot (rf) step right on 3 slow. Fall away rock step: cross lf behind rf on 5 quick, replace weight to rf on 6 quick, or rock rock.
L follows G: steps back on her right foot on 5 in rock
step.
Vivid Rock jive,
basic steps:
There are vivid movements up and down in arms and
legs.
We count 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 (6 times quick).
G: lf to left tap
on 1 step down on 2; rf to right tap on 3 step down on 4; fall away
rock on 5 and 6, see above.
Tap:
brush your toe, step down: weight onto the ball of your foot.
The melody here is intended for easy learning the
dance (a pedagogical, educational melody). The notes are counted: 1, 2 a 3, 4 a
5, 6, where the 1/16 notes a are
included to make the steps light and bouncing.
Jive music is usually in 4/4 alla breve, which is used
here for the circle part and chain with walking steps. But the jive dance is
6/4 so I have chosen to make the music here 6/4 for the jive couple dance. The
melody fits note by note with the dance steps.
Accordion: beats pr bar: 3 + 3 in 6/4, and 2 + 2 in
4/4.
These rock jive figures can be seen explained (in
English) by

(Copenhagen Main Library) (instruction in the “calm rock jive basic steps”),
Simon & Heidi Cruwys: Discover dance, latin: Rock
& Roll, DVD (Birkerød Library) (using the more “vivid rock jive basic
steps”).
