Our sailor has been to America and was inspired to use jive in a traditional Danish type folk dance.

We dance for the pleasure so you are free to select a relaxed informal hold etc.

Dance description

Start: big circle of couples (all the dancers of the ballroom)

Short description:

The dance consists of 5 parts: big circle, couple dance, chain, couple dance with the new partner, chain:

1        big circle clockwise and anti clockwise, walking steps

2a      jive basic steps followed by full reverse turn

2b      basic steps followed by Lady (L) turn under arm out and back

3        chain (= grand right and left) to a new partner (slow) walking steps; or jive bota foga

4a      basic steps followed by Gent (G) changing hands behind his back, L turns under arm home

4b      basic steps followed by L american spin, and basic steps

5        chain to a new partner

In learning the dance: only basic jive steps in 2 and 4.

Or your own free jive dance in 2 and 4 (with due consideration of others and the integrity).

Circle only the first time for introduction, or rather each time for relaxation and the integrity of the ball.

Description in detail:

bar no

1-8                Big circle, holding hands, walking steps: clockwise and anticlockwise, left and right pr bar.

9-10              2 jive basic steps, close hold.

11                 Basic steps with ½ reverse turn in the chasse.

12                 ½ reverse turn as in 11, so now it is a full reverse turn (left turn).

9-10              Again 2 basic jive steps in close hold (which we have between all the figures).

11                 G: basic step but after the rock step part: L right turns out under G left + L right arms (for pulling in the rock step).

13                 In the same way L left turns back under arms.

14-17            Chain, slow walk (left and right pr takt) (until no 5, in right hand = new partner). OR: jive-botafoga (see below); or slow side chasses left and right.

18-19            2 basic steps 2 hand hold, turn so G faces wall for:

20                 G-L changing place by G changing hands behind G’s back: L right hand (rh) in G left hand (lh) rock step, then 1 chasse forward passing partner to left side G left ¼ turn while changing L rh to G rh and then behind G back to G lh during next 1 chasse left turning further ¼, now ready to pull in rock step.

21                 G-L changing place back home: L left turn under arm, G chasse over with right turn to place.

18-19            2 basic steps.

20                 L: american spin while G basic step: rock step, chasse, then L fast full right turn, with or without L hand in G hand.

22                 1 basic step.

23-26            Chain to a new partner.

The dance is repeated from bar 1 with a circle. Or from bar 9 with couple dance.

In couple dance 9-13 and 18-22 it can be chosen to have only basic jive steps (with close hold, or 2 hand hold, or 1 hand hold) and then eventually expand with dance figures.

G-D changing place by G changing hands behind back in bar 20-21 can be substituted by a simple fan (= throw away):

20                 Rock step, L rh in G lh, then a small chasse on the spot G ¼ right turn L ¼ left turn so they both face opposite line of dance, then chasse away from partner.

21                 Rock step with pull in hands, then chasses turning back into place to 2 hand hold.

Dance steps and dance figures:

Jive basic steps and basic figure:

The count is 1, 2, 3 a 4, 5 a 6 in 1 bar, with rock step on 1, 2 and G side chasse to the left on 3 a 4 and G side chasse to the right on 5 a 6. Between 3 and 4 a is close to 4. (Cha-cha-cha has chasse with & in the middle; it is considered easier and less ”jumping”). Rock step (fall away rock): G: lf is crossed behind rf 1, replace weight to rf 2; L crosses rf behind lf and follows G in side chasses. During rock step there may be pulling in the hands.

Rock jive:

Rock jive is danced with tap steps instead of chasses, see the next dance. Chasses and tap steps are often mixed in jive (because the chasses are so fast).

Bota foga:

Chain 14-17 can be omitted to get all the jive dance figures with the same partner or chain can be substituted by bota foga (bota fogo) chasses (see samba dance):

from 13: L turn home under G left arm:

14                 L rh in G lh: G slowly chasse to the left, L right chasse turns ½ right into her left and his right arm so her back and left side is towards G, L now stand close to the right of G.

15                 G chasse to right and L to left under raised arms so that they stand apart side by side and can wave G rh and L lh.

16                 Then chasse back, under and into arms, to L close right of G.

17                 G chasse to the right, and L chasse to the left turning left to face G in normal hold.

These 4 bars are in 4/4 so they have only chasses without rock steps.

Music

Jive music is usually in 4/4 alla breve. But I have chosen to make it 6/4 for the jive couple dance because the jive dance is 6/4. The melody fits note by note with the dance steps. The circle and chain part is 4/4.

Accordion: beats pr bar: 3 + 3 in 6/4, and 2 + 2 in 4/4.

Video

These foxtrot figures can be seen nicely explained (in English) by David Syncamore & Denise Weavers, Latin American Dancing for beginners, 1984 (video Copenhagen Main Library).

(Their jive is appropriate for dancers past 35, and for Danish folk dance style).
