Our sailor has been far away to turn around after touching, tangoing the Southern Tropic and was inspired to use tango steps in a traditional Danish type folk dance.

We here dance European (Spanish, English) tango (with basic steps: slow slow quick quick over 1½ bars).

(European tango is said to have some origin centuries back to originally England, then via Spain, Cuba, Argentine back to Europe, with many alterations).

We dance for the pleasure so you are free to select a relaxed informal hold etc.

Dance description

Start: big circle of couples (all the dancers of the ballroom)

Short description:

After an introduction with a big circle, the dance consists of 2 parts: chain and couple dance with the new partner:

intr     big circle clockwise, walking steps

1a      2 tango steps chain to a new partner for couple dance

1b      2 tango basic steps in line of dance (lod)

1a+1b is repeated

2        couple dance: 3 dance figures: rock turn, promenade, reverse turn, (or maybe your choice)

Possible termination, coda (=intro) by promenade + quick natural turn

Description in detail:

bar no

1-4                Big circle, holding hands, clockwise walking steps.

5-7                Chain with 2 tango steps, passing partner and the next, to come to a new partner for couple dance.

8-10              Couple dance, close hold, 2 tango basic steps in line of dance (lod).

11-16            Repeat 5-10. With our last new partner we continue with couple dance tango:

17-19            ¼ - ½ natural turn (right turn) with rock (3 rocks), ending with the back corte ¼ left turn (reverse turn).

20-22            Couple dance with dance figures, promenade

23-24½         ending with back corte ¼ left turn (1½ bars)

24½-27½      Reverse turn (forward), (2 chasses),

27½-28         ending with back corte ¼ left turn

The dance repeats with chain in bar 5 (chain = grand right and left: right hand to your partner, left hand to next, G walks in lod L against lod).

1-4                Maybe coda-ending: promenade as 20-22 with (fast) natural turn + step close.

Dance steps and dance figures:

Basic steps: close hold, walk in line of dance (lod), Gent (G) forward Lady (L) backward.

1 basic step: slow slow quick quick = 1½ bars. One quick = ½ slow (se note sheet).

G: left foot (lf) forward slow, right foot (rf) forward slow, lf forward quick, rf to the right quick.

L follows G, i.e. rf back …

Chain: L goes towards G with start on rf.

Back corte (¼ backwards left turn): used in the following 3 figures, close hold.

slow quick quick slow (-close) = 1½ bars.

G: lf back slow, rf back with turn quick, lf back with turn quick, rf close to lf slow.

L follows G.

Rock-turn (right turn): (followed by back corte ¼ left turn), using 3 bars. Close hold.

slow slow quick quick = 1½ bars.

G: lf forward slow, rf forward with turn slow and rf stays forward between L legs, back on lf turn quick, replace weight to rf quick, weight to lf slow in back corte with further quick quick close. The 3 steps with rf forward under L: quick quick slow = 3 rock steps.

L follows G.

Promenade (+link): (followed by back corte ¼ left turn), using = 4½ bars. Close hold, which opens a little.

slow slow quick quick (-close) slow slow quick quick (-close) = 3 bars.

G facing diagonally to the wall, close hold: lf forward slow, rf forward slow, L follows G. Then lf to the side in lod quick, rf close to lf quick, L follows G and now G turns a little right and G a little left so G+L both face the lod and walk side by side in close hold opened a little: both forward on outside foot (G lf L rf) slow, forward on inside leg quick, both turn to face each other: outside foot to the side (lod) quick, other foot close slow.

This is followed by back corte ¼ left turn.

Promenade can be followed by (include) a fast full right turn on the last 3 steps quick quick slow.

Reverse turn (left turn): (followed by back corte ¼ left turn), using = 4½ bars. Close hold.

slow slow, quick quick slow, quick quick slow (-close) = 3 bars.

Close hold, G: lf forward slow, rf forward slow, lf forward with turn quick, rf to the side with turn quick, lf behind rf slow. Now G’s back is almost in lod. rf back (= in lod) quick, lf to the side (= in lod) quick, rf close to lf slow. Now G faces the wall. The left turn is completed by back corte ¼ left turn (lf back), or left turn is completed by a normal basic step (lf forward).

L follows G.

Music

The melody in the 4 intro bars (1-4) gives the traditional tango rhythm. In the rest of the melody (5-28) there is exactly one note for each step: slow slow, quick quick slow, slow quick quick, in the 3 bars 5-7 and again in 8-10, 11-13, 14-16, i.e. 2 tango steps to 3 bars of music. European tango is danced in 3/4 to 2/4 music. (We have a type of folk dances in Denmark, sønder honing (south ho), with the same dance-music difference). From bar 17 this pattern is changed because of special dance figures. (In argentine tango there is not this deviation from music to dance).

To be played: as spanish tango:

2 + 2 beats pr bar, as shown in intro (bar 1-4).

These tango figures can be seen nicely explained (in English) by:

Ian & Ruth Walker, Social Ballroom Dancing Collection, for beginners, The Tango, Instep Videos, 1989 (Lyngby Library).

Ian & Ruth propose and demonstrate the succession I have used in bar 14-28.
